Bridge Housing: Building climate resilience

Winner of the Brighter Future Excellence in Social Housing 2025 Award, Bridge Housing has been successfully embedding an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Sustainability Framework within their business.

As a social housing provider in Sydney NSW, Bridge Housing recognised that low incomes and a high prevalence of disability and chronic health concerns, meant their tenants were particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Supporting their commitment to continue to change lives for generations to come, they made the decision to develop an ESG Sustainability Framework, to not only improve the wellbeing of their own tenants but also contribute to climate resilience at a community level.

The framework connects environmental sustainability to their social purpose and has enabled them to deliver a range of practical initiatives. These include retrofitting common areas to reduce energy consumption through LED sensor lights and solar panels, reducing their emissions profile by 54% by utilising an environmental baseline calculator, and reducing tenants’ social isolation by implementing a range of social programs and wellness checks.

Bridge Housing has also prioritised working in partnership with organisations who have like-minded ESG objectives to share costs via joint implementation of initiatives.

By purposefully aligning their mission, values and operations with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, Bridge Housing are ensuring their ESG framework delivers practical tenant outcomes that make a lasting and significant difference to social housing service delivery.

The AHI acknowledges the tireless efforts of those working within the homelessness sector, supporting the thousands of people experiencing homelessness and searching for meaningful pathways to live normal, productive and healthy lives. Our #HomelessnessWeek2025 sector forum in Sydney saw over 150 leaders, workers, politicians, policy makers, social impact collaborators, change makers and – most importantly - people with lived experience come together to talk about the impact of homelessness and share innovative responses within our community. Collaboration is key and the vibe in the room was inspiring. Real people making real differences. But we know it is far from enough and we must all strive to do more. We commend the NSW Minns Government, in particular the Hon Rose Jackson MLC, for their bold commitment to ‘make homelessness rare, brief and not repeated because people have a safe home and the support to keep it’ through the release of the NSW Homelessness Strategy 2025-2035. Thanks to Rebecca Pinkstone CEO Homes NSW and Dom Rowe CEO Homelessness NSW for their strong leadership and commitment to ending homelessness and providing more people with a home. The AHI continues to support and connect the workers who turn up, show up and get things done. Every single day.
