AHI Brighter Future Awards Judge
Joanne Edsor
Queensland Public Trustee
My career in housing began in the late '80s in Aboriginal housing, then for the SA Housing Trust as a priority assessments case worker. I have been privileged to work in all operational areas of housing service delivery and was gifted various pivotal roles within the housing sector throughout my career.
My mentors and managers gave me opportunities that enabled me to learn, deepening my knowledge of operational management and housing renewal projects and the Australian housing eco system. My move to Victoria in the '90s marked a significant milestone where I led neighbourhood renewal initiatives and climbed the ranks in management, later channelling my expertise into Human Services Partnerships, Business Improvement, and ultimately leading in Disability Services deinstitutionalisation and community housing programs. Seed funding for the Disability Housing Trust (now Housing Choices) was one memorable achievement.
The drive to make a meaningful difference followed me to New South Wales in 2009. As Chief Operating Officer of SGCH, I was part of a remarkable growth period fuelled by a team of exceptional housing professionals. My later tenure at Property NSW further refined my strategic asset planning and project management skills across diverse properties. In my current role at Queensland Public Trustee I am applying those prior learnings and focussed on property optimisation for people living with a disability and those in our community who wish to age with independence and dignity.
Throughout my career, the essence of my work has been about making a positive, tangible difference in the lives of people in our community who are vulnerable and exposed to disadvantage. In 2021 I had reason to take stock of my life, and I am thankful to my contemporaries who generously confirmed that my career has made a positives difference to people in communities where I have worked. I am grateful for the opportunities given to me to build my knowledge and to apply that to service delivery in the public purpose sector.
To make lasting change its helpful to know the sector boundaries, prioritise good governance, manage risk proactively and to navigate systems with integrity and laser like focus on the people impacted by your action or lack of action. Across multiple State jurisdictions, social and affordable housing has remained constant, close to my heart, whether working as a volunteer or in paid capacities I will continue advocating for a better deal for people living with a disability and for ageing communities.
I am a little chuffed that my past mentees are now major influencers in the housing and community sector and I am honoured to be a judge for the Brighter Future Awards, celebrating the work of our emerging leader who are forging paths towards better housing solutions for our community.
