Christy Gillin: Embracing new challenges and inspiring change

Winner of the Future Leader Brighter Future 2025 Award, Christy Gillin from Home in Place NSW continually seeks to improve housing outcomes for those in need.

When Home in Place nominated Christy for the Future Leader award, they identified she has the courage to challenge existing models, the expertise to implement meaningful change, and the leadership skills to inspire others to follow her vision. In our rapidly changing and often complex sector, these qualities are vital to our collective ability to meet key challenges while keeping tenants at the heart of all that we do.

Christy has been driven to lead and improve since starting at Home in Place, continuously taking on tasks and responsibilities over and above her role. She initially came on board as a Tenancy Relations Officer Assistant, before moving into the Tenancy Relations Officer role, and then taking on the 2IC position. She had an instrumental role in setting up their Taree office and building the business from the ground up. This included successfully managing the operational roll-out of the Social Housing Management Transfer, overseeing the transition of tenancies from Homes NSW to Home in Place. By building strong relationships with tenants, government stakeholders, and community organisations, the transfer was executed smoothly, reinforcing trust within the community.

Christy’s strategic vision has driven process improvements that enhance efficiency and tenant experience. She has been instrumental in refining policy frameworks and streamlining compliance procedures, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to best practices. A true champion of continuous improvement, Christy has played a key role in fostering a culture of transparency, collaboration and accountability within her teams.

Her ability to cultivate and sustain strong relationships, mobilise diverse stakeholders, and implement innovative solutions has resulted in lasting improvements for the organisation and the communities it serves

When asked for a comment Christy said “I am deeply honoured to receive this award and grateful to be recognised among so many dedicated professionals in our sector. While the nomination itself was incredibly humbling, this recognition reflects the collective effort of the teams and communities I have the privilege to work alongside every day.”

“Throughout my career with Home in Place, I have remained committed to strengthening communities, supporting team growth, and delivering sustainable tenancies that create long-term stability for residents. I believe strong leadership is grounded in collaboration, accountability, and a genuine commitment to continuous improvement”, said Christy. “This award reinforces my passion for the community housing sector and my belief in its power to create lasting social impact. I look forward to continuing to grow, to challenge existing models, and to contribute to a future where innovation, partnership, and community remain at the heart of everything we do.”

Christy Gillin exemplifies the type of leader our sector needs. She has the ability to balance strategic decision-making with compassionate leadership. Her leadership is rooted in an unwavering dedication to empowering others. That dedication was reflected recently as a speaker at the AHI NSW Branch International Women’s Day event.

Whether through advocacy, process innovation, or direct engagement with vulnerable populations, Christy continually seeks to improve housing outcomes for those in need.

The AHI acknowledges the tireless efforts of those working within the homelessness sector, supporting the thousands of people experiencing homelessness and searching for meaningful pathways to live normal, productive and healthy lives. Our #HomelessnessWeek2025 sector forum in Sydney saw over 150 leaders, workers, politicians, policy makers, social impact collaborators, change makers and – most importantly - people with lived experience come together to talk about the impact of homelessness and share innovative responses within our community. Collaboration is key and the vibe in the room was inspiring. Real people making real differences. But we know it is far from enough and we must all strive to do more. We commend the NSW Minns Government, in particular the Hon Rose Jackson MLC, for their bold commitment to ‘make homelessness rare, brief and not repeated because people have a safe home and the support to keep it’ through the release of the NSW Homelessness Strategy 2025-2035. Thanks to Rebecca Pinkstone CEO Homes NSW and Dom Rowe CEO Homelessness NSW for their strong leadership and commitment to ending homelessness and providing more people with a home. The AHI continues to support and connect the workers who turn up, show up and get things done. Every single day.
