Introducing Claire Summerer: AHI Learning and Development Specialist

The AHI is pleased to welcome Claire Summerer who has recently joined the team as our Learning and Development Specialist.

Claire brings to AHI a breadth of knowledge and experience in learning, leadership development, quality standards and business process improvement, gained from working across the private, government and community sectors.

In this role Claire will develop our learning & development strategy that will support the needs of housing professionals including development of learning programs, workshops, webinars and learning resources which align with AHI’s professional development framework. She will also be making sure our programs meet consistent standards of quality and ensure contemporary evidence based adult learning principles are utilised.

With a passion for building leadership capacity and enabling life-long learning, Claire strongly believes in developing learning opportunities that deliver meaningful outcomes. “It’s great to learn new things or take on new perspectives but knowing more at the end of a workshop isn’t enough. It’s important to bridge the ‘knowing/doing gap’ and equip housing professionals with the ability to apply what they have learned to the situations they experience every day.”

Reflecting her commitment to social justice, she has volunteered with a range of community initiatives in Australia and overseas, including Habitat for Humanity, the Asylum Seekers Centre, Primary Ethics and See Beyond Borders. “These incredible programs have shown me that whilst support is critical—it must come with compassion and understanding of the people and communities you are working with.” Claire’s approach is very customer driven, and she’s looking forward to listening to AHI members about what they want to see in our professional development programs.  She is particularly interested in utilising the expertise inherent across our membership base to co-design programs that will help to build capacity across the housing sector. You can contact her for a chat at Claire@housinginstitute.org.au.

The AHI acknowledges the tireless efforts of those working within the homelessness sector, supporting the thousands of people experiencing homelessness and searching for meaningful pathways to live normal, productive and healthy lives. Our #HomelessnessWeek2025 sector forum in Sydney saw over 150 leaders, workers, politicians, policy makers, social impact collaborators, change makers and – most importantly - people with lived experience come together to talk about the impact of homelessness and share innovative responses within our community. Collaboration is key and the vibe in the room was inspiring. Real people making real differences. But we know it is far from enough and we must all strive to do more. We commend the NSW Minns Government, in particular the Hon Rose Jackson MLC, for their bold commitment to ‘make homelessness rare, brief and not repeated because people have a safe home and the support to keep it’ through the release of the NSW Homelessness Strategy 2025-2035. Thanks to Rebecca Pinkstone CEO Homes NSW and Dom Rowe CEO Homelessness NSW for their strong leadership and commitment to ending homelessness and providing more people with a home. The AHI continues to support and connect the workers who turn up, show up and get things done. Every single day.
