Community pantry opens at the Broken Hill 123 Hub

The Broken Hill community now has access to free or low-cost grocery items from the 123 Hub in Creedon Street Broken Hill.

Last Thursday, Home in Place Executive Manager Community Development Krystal Moores officially opened the Pantry.

Around 80 people turned up for the grand opening which included a Welcome to Country, BBQ breakfast and a ribbon and cake cutting ceremony. Guests also had the opportunity to preview the pantry before it was open to the public.

Ms Moores said the Pantry is another important and timely addition to the hub’s service offering.

“With continuing cost of living pressures, the Pantry offers a conveniently located and affordable place to shop for our tenants and others who are doing it tougher than most,” Ms Moores said.

“We are grateful for the support of Foodbank to make the Pantry a reality,” she said.

“At Home in Place we do more than put a roof over people’s heads. Providing opportunity for tenants to save money and to participate fully in the community is a priority.”

“The 123 Hub is a key and successful part of our tenant engagement and community development programs in Broken Hill. It is a safe, culturally appropriate place where tenants and the Broken Hill community can come together.

“Through the hub we also provide information and social and educational activities to help build life and employment skills. Post COVID-19, we are encouraging government agencies and community service organisations to again use the hub as a convenient outreach centre for people living in this part of the community.

“Tenants have broadly welcomed the hub it has been praised by Police and other community services for supporting tenants, helping to bring communities together and reducing rates of anti-social behaviour.”

The 123 Hub opened in late 2015 in a dis-used NSW Government housing property. Home in Place paid for the renovation and fit-out of the premises and funds the hub’s operating costs.

Pantry is modelled on a successful shop at Home in Place’s other community hub on the NSW Central Coast. The Pantry will initially open every Thursday from 10am to 2pm. It accepts cash, EFTPOS and credit card payments.

For more information on the services at the hub, people can call 1300 333 733 or stay up to date with happenings at the hub via the @123Creedonsthub Facebook page.

The AHI acknowledges the tireless efforts of those working within the homelessness sector, supporting the thousands of people experiencing homelessness and searching for meaningful pathways to live normal, productive and healthy lives. Our #HomelessnessWeek2025 sector forum in Sydney saw over 150 leaders, workers, politicians, policy makers, social impact collaborators, change makers and – most importantly - people with lived experience come together to talk about the impact of homelessness and share innovative responses within our community. Collaboration is key and the vibe in the room was inspiring. Real people making real differences. But we know it is far from enough and we must all strive to do more. We commend the NSW Minns Government, in particular the Hon Rose Jackson MLC, for their bold commitment to ‘make homelessness rare, brief and not repeated because people have a safe home and the support to keep it’ through the release of the NSW Homelessness Strategy 2025-2035. Thanks to Rebecca Pinkstone CEO Homes NSW and Dom Rowe CEO Homelessness NSW for their strong leadership and commitment to ending homelessness and providing more people with a home. The AHI continues to support and connect the workers who turn up, show up and get things done. Every single day.
